Harm van der Zeeuw trained in the ceramic industry where he gained an understanding of technical and chemical processes while developing an interest in ceramic art. A constant theme in his work is the influence of technology in society, his fantasy machines appear to be primitive and post-apocalyptic at the same time. His achieves a well-worn, often rusty surface texture with his technique of ‘burnt clay ‘using iron and copper oxides. Parts of his structures feature slip cast nuts, bolts and coils of wire, but often these are incorporated as real elements. The figures that drive these machines are humorous, reminiscent of Martinware; mystical men, women, birds and animals, all compelling and delightful. All is work is heavily reduction fired in a gas kiln.
